March 8, 2013 – the tub is gone – First Oriole of the Season

March 8, 2013

The public bath tub which stood next to the swamp for about 8 months is gone.  How will the locals endure this insult?  The plumbing for the almost-ready-to-open spa requires rearrangement of the piping at the well head, adjacent to the old bath tub (and before that the hot tub).  So hot spring water which flows into the swamp will soon be diverted to the spa and there will be no source of water for the bath tub.  The bath tub was tacky.  Also, the beat-up patio furniture which surrounded the bath tub is gone,  The place looks much better.  If only John Waters could have seen it!

I saw my first migrant bird  of the season today, a very bright male Bullock’s Oriole. Last year we had a adult male and a first year male at my feeders. Today’s bird was likely one of these two.  Hooded Orioles and black-headed grosbeaks should arrive soon.  Orioles and western tanagers really like oranges.  Cut up an orange and impale halves on a fence or wire and the birds will find it.
