This morning as I did my hike around the pond I flushed a large bird that I recognized as an American Bittern. I’ve previously seen this species once in San Diego County and several times at Wister in Imperial County. This bird is an uncommon and localized winter visitor to the county. It is usually only seen along in coast in freshwater marshes. There is at least one other record for American Bittern in Jacumba, Guy McCaskie observed one bird on April 10, 1976.
The call of this bird is an unmistakeable and loud “ka-plunk, ka-plunk.”
Since there is not much for this bird to eat at the pond, I don’t think it will hang around.
